PITTSFIELD -- In 2013, in Berkshire County volleyball, the net was Katie Morin’s domain.
"She was dominant in the middle of the net," said Lee coach John Warner. "Game in and game out, really, no one in the county could handle her. She was by far the strength of our team."
A team, by the way, that won the county championship. Morin, named the All-Eagle Volleyball MVP, led her team with 249 kills and 52 blocks, loud testimony that, both offensively and defensively, she was the tip of the Wildcat spear when it came to volleyball.
Those numbers ballooned to an impressive 826 kills and 230 blocks for her career.
While Morin was certainly a force up front, Warner emphasized that she was really just a tremendous all-around player.
"Her serve was so consistant," he said. "And originally, when the year began, she was going to be our setter."
"That’s what I thought was going to happen," agreed Morin. "At the beginning of the year, we didn’t really have anyone else.’
Lee’s setter last year, All-Eagle performer Lauren Richardson, had graduated.
But Warner did have a very good athlete in freshman Kendra Williams. And early in the season, he said, Williams was playing so well, he moved her to the setter’s position.
That position, which requires timing and hustle, is usually reserved for an upperclassman.
"But she was great," said Warner, "almost from Day One."
"I’ve always had very good setters," said Morin. "Kendra this year and Lauren Richardson the two years before that. I’ve been lucky."
Morin is not unfamiliar with accolades. She has been a member of the All-Eagle volleyball team the past three years. She was also awarded the Southern Berkshire Sportsmanship Award for her sport.
"As a senior," she said, "I tried to take more of a leadership role this year."
She was a four-year starter for the Wildcats, and the third county MVP in program history, said warner. Morin joined Julia Warner in 2011 and Jenna Wade several years ago, he said.
"She joins a very select group," said Warner.
