WILLIAMSTOWN -- To say April has been a good month for the Mount Greylock baseball team would be an understatement.
The Mounties beat their second Division I opponent of the month on Friday afternoon, dispatching Pittsfield 7-3.
"It's a huge win," said winning pitcher Ian Brink, whose team also knocked off Taconic. "A Division I opponent and us getting a win against a Division I opponent is big for us and our seeding [come tournament time]."
With the score tied 2-2 after three innings, the Mounties scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning on Jake Benzinger's two-run single through a drawn-in Pittsfield infield. The Mounties (7-1, 7-1) outscored PHS 5-1 over the final 3 1/2 innings to get the win and end a three-game winning streak for the Generals (5-4, 2-3).
"With two runs, I feel much more confident than one run," said Brink.
Pittsfield tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Dom Traversa and a single by Bobby New in the top of the third inning. After a scoreless fourth, the Mounties took the lead for keeps in the fifth.
Delaney Pudvar led off by hitting a ball into the hole at short and beating Kevin Donati's throw for a single. Pudvar took third on Eric Hirsch's double. With the infield in, Benzinger hit a 2-1 pitch from Pittsfield starter Joey Gratton to center, scoring both runs. The third run scored on an error.
Greylock added two in the sixth on Dan Flynn's two-run double.
All the while, Brink was keeping the Generals under control.
"We shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times too, took ourselves out of situations," Pittsfield coach Bob Moynihan said. "They got some big hits. We made a couple of errors, and that was the name of the game. They took advantage, and we were climbing up the hill the whole way."
The Generals cut Greylock's lead to 5-3 in the top of the sixth on Shane Tierney's RBI double. That ended Brink's day, and sophomore left-hander Adam Hall came on in relief. Hall froze Donati on a 1-2 pitch for an inning-ending strikeout, and he had a six-pitch seventh. Brink, who took over third base in the seventh, had a big play as he made an over-the-shoulder catch on a foul fly ball down the left-field line by Chad Shade.
"He's done a great job," Greylock coach Steve Messina said of Hall. "He throws strikes. He's around the plate. He's a really good pitcher. He's smart, very smart."
