ADAMS -- Caroline Tomkowicz was outstanding in the circle for the Hoosac Valley softball team on Tuesday, giving up a run on only two hits. Unfortunately for Tomkowicz and the Hurricanes, Mount Everett's Alicia Bazonski was better.

Bazonski tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out 15 as the visiting Eagles knocked off Hoosac 1-0.

"Both teams were playing some awesome softball," said Hoosac coach Morgan Shafer. "It was a battle for the South. It was a big win for them."

The game's only run came in the fourth inning when Everett's Morgan DeGrenier led off with a single to right. After stealing second, DeGrenier scored on Natasha MacLeay's double.

The Hurricanes (3-2) threatened once in the sixth inning when Alyssa Pause hit a one-out single and stole second. Bazonski left Pause stranded at second.

Tomkowicz struck out nine.
