C/W-Mass. boys lacrosse: St. Bernard's 5, Wahconah 4

FITCHBURG -- Wahconah's run in the Central/Western Division III boys lacrosse tournament ended earlier than coach Zach Sondrini and the Warriors might have liked.

The ninth-seeded Warriors dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to No. 8 St. Bernard's on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, St. Bernard's advances to play at top-seeded Mount Greylock on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Wahconah fell behind 5-3 on Curtiss Vachon's second goal of the game, coming with 28 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Bernardians' goalie Conor McKew had nine saves in the game, giving up only one goal in the final quarter. That was scored by Quinn Caesar with 8:38 left to play.

Nick Clayton, Mike Wagner and Kyle Gazzillo also scored goals for Wahconah.

"I'm proud of the effort from my guys today," Sondrini said. "They left it all out there today.

"We hadn't seen too many zone defenses this season, so we had to make some adjustments at halftime. They've got a very good goalie over there, so it was going to be tough to find the net no matter what."
