PITTSFIELD -- Emily Koldys only struck out one Chicopee Comp batter Thursday.

With both the way she was keeping batters off balance and the way the Pittsfield High School defense backed her up, Koldys didn't need more Ks than that.

She retired the first 13 batters she faced, allowing just a walk and a single as the Generals routed Comp 12-0 in six innings to start the Western Mass. Division I tournament.

"She was just attacking and making our defense work, and our defense backed her up," PHS coach Greg Marchbanks said of Koldys' performance.

Koldys got 10 groundball outs on the day, and Pittsfield's (14-7) defense played error-free ball behind her. The offense also backed up Koldys with seven runs in the first two innings.

Allie Hunt was 4 for 4 with five RBI for the Generals. She tripled home two runs in the first and tripled home three more in the second, and came a home run short of the cycle.

"I was trying to hit it to the gaps, where the players weren't," Hunt said.

Aoife Nester hit a one-out homer in the fourth inning, and Erin Murphy and Mollie DiNicola drove in a run each for PHS. The Generals finished the mercy-rule win with four runs in the sixth.

"That game right there is indicative of what we can do," Marchbanks said.

The next test is the big one for Pittsfield, as unbeaten top seed Westfield awaits the eighth-seeded Generals. That game is tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday in Westfield.

Westfield won the teams' regular-season meeting, beating PHS 15-3 on April 17 in Pittsfield. Still, the Generals are building confidence with every win at this point in the season.

"We've faced Westfield already and we're aware of what they have," Marchbanks said. "We've faced Longmeadow ... and we've faced East Longmeadow. I think we're right there with every single team."
