SHEFFIELD -- The Mount Everett softball team opened defense of its Western Mass. Division III title in crisp fashion Saturday, riding a two-hitter by pitcher Alicia Bazonski to an 8-0 win over Pioneer.
Bazonski struck out 12, walked none and reached a three-ball count on only two batters.
And believes she can do better
"I pitched okay," she said. "The 12 strikeouts were good, the no walks were good, But I can pitch better."
"She was a little off early on," said Eagle coach Kurt DeGrenier. "When you see [catcher] Morgan DeGrenier moving around out there, you know Alicia’s having an off day. Of course, as I say all the time, her off days are great days for everyone else."
Sam Hoover opened the scoring for the Eagles in the first, drilling a base hit, advancing to second on a walk to Bazonski and scoring on a wild pitch.
In the second, Brooke Morehouse walked, stole second and scored on Emily Coon’s single. Coon came around on an RBI double by Morgan DeGrenier and it was 3-0.
That was really all Bazonski needed. She set down the first eight batters before the No. 9 hitter, Kaitlin Grover fouled off three pitches before stroking a clean single up the middle. Which came to naught when Bazonski punched out Grover’s teammate, Tara O’Neil, to end the inning.
The Eagles sealed the deal with a five-run fifth. Bazonski’s two-run triple and Chandler DeGrenier’s two-run single were the big hits
That was sort of all she wrote, as the rocket-armed Bazonski set down the last 10 Panther batters in succession.
"It was a good way to start the tournament," said Morgan DeGrenier who was 2 for 3 with a double.. "We got a well-pitched game and some timely hits."
