LEOMINSTER -- The Pittsfield Suns scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the score, but Ryder Miconi doubled in the winning run in the bottom of the frame to give the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs an 11-10 win in the Suns' Futures Collegiate Baseball League season opener Wednesday.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Wachusett's Thomas Buonopane picked up a pinch-hit single off Nate Speilvogel. One batter later, Miconi doubled Buonopane home on a 1-1 pitch to end the game.
Pittsfield had trailed by two runs entering the ninth, but got a run in on a bases-loaded balk with one out, and Paul Cotler drove in Zack Tower on the next pitch with a single to tie the score. The Suns, however, left the bases loaded after that.
Tower was 1 for 4 with a third-inning grand slam for the Suns. Cotler, Derek Gardella and Brenden Geary drove in a run each for Pittsfield.
Phil Reese was roughed up in his opening-night start for Pittsfield, allowing eight runs on six hits in just two innings. Four of those runs were unearned.
