PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- Gary Tesch had the best night of his Futures League career Tuesday. It couldn't have come at a better time for Tesch's Pittsfield Suns teammates.
Tesch hit three home runs, including a second inning grand slam, and drove in seven as the Suns routed the Seacoast Mavericks 12-2, ending a two-game losing streak.
The Suns lost at Torrington Saturday and at home to Nashua on Sunday, and were outscored 21-8 in those two games. On Tuesday, the Suns made sure there would be no doubt about the game.
Phil Reese picked up his first win of the season. The right-hander from Holy Cross gave up one run on six hits in seven innings. That run came on a solo home run by Tyler Fortanascio in the fifth inning. Reese had an 85-pitch night, 59 of them went for strikes. Jordan Barbarotta of Pittsfield threw the final two innings, giving up a run on four hits.
Pittsfield got a run in the first inning on an RBI single by Jeff McGarry, who drove in Tesch, his University of Pennsylvania teammate.
Seacoast starter Matt Wynne hit Edgar Montes and Steve Dill to open the second inning and walked Dan Cellucci to load the bases. Dan Donohue's single plated Montes to make it 2-0. Then Tesch homered on a 1-2 pitch, clearing the bases for the grand slam.
Tesch, who finished 5 for 6, hit a solo home run with two outs in the fourth and hit a two-run homer in the ninth.
