NORTH ADAMS -- The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars used solid pitching and aggresive base running to claim a 12-0 win over the North Adams 14-year old All-Stars on Tuesday night.
The win moves Pittsfield to 3-0 in the Western State Tournament pool play, They are in first place in Pool A.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning, North Adams missed a chance to cut into Pittsfield’s lead when reliever Drew DeMartino forced a ground out to end the inning with the bases loaded. DeMartino pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out six and scattering three hits.
At the plate, DeMartino drew three walks, scored twice and stole two bases while teammate Devin Walker went 3 for 4 and scored two runs to key the offense.
"Drew’s what we call a money player," Pittsfield coach Eric Stone said. "He’s a gamer and he puts his teammates on his back. He wants to win."
After the third, Pittsfield scored at least once in every inning. A five-run seventh all but ended the game for North Adams.
The seventh saw three different North Adams pitchers take the mound.
"We were trying to keep our pitchers under two innings each because most of them have [house league] playoff games tomorrow night and that hurt us," North Adams coach Nate Tatro said. "Pittsfield played a great game. They always do. They’re a great baseball team."
Both teams struggled to hit with runners on base. North Adams left 10 runners on, Pittsfield 11.
Even though his team got the win, Stone said he wasn’t completely satified.
"We played a little sloppy. ... We left way too many runners on, but you know what, that’s baseball. You’ve got to get the key hit."
Pittsfield faces Worcester Joe Schwartz on Sunday at Deming.
