Five members of the Pittsfield Suns will be in Brockton on Thursday to participate in the third annual Futures League All-Star Game.
Catcher Dan Palazzo and pitchers Alex Lagos, Nate Spielvogel, Phil Reese and Jamin McCann, will be on the Western Division team. A sixth Suns player, outfielder Gary Tesch, is part of the 27th-player vote.
The All-Star teams are picked on a vote by the league’s managers and 26 players are selected that way. The 27th player is picked after an on-line vote by fans. There are 10 players, five from each division, eligible to be voted on. Tesch is one of the five Western Division players that can be voted on at www.thefuturesleague.com.
Festivities for the All-Star Game begin Thursday at 3:30 p.m. with a Scouts’ Day event. Last year the All-Star Game was held at Wahconah Park and more than 30 scouts were in attendance. The All-Stars and a select group of players got to pitch, hit, field and throw in front of those scouts.
At 6:30 p.m., there will be a Home Run Derby competition and the All-Star Game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
Last year, five Suns players played in the game at Wahconah. Outfielder Kyle Singleton, catcher Steve Dill and pitchers Adam Whitt and Aaron Plunkett were on the Massachusetts roster. The game was a Massachusetts vs. New England game. Crinella earned enough fan votes to make the team.
Whitt, who is a reliever for the Cape Cod League’s Cotuit Kettelers, will pitch in his second All-Star game on Sunday. He was named to the West Division team for the Cape Cod League All-Star Game. That game will be played in Bourne.
Suns catcher Palazzo is the only position player to make the managers’ team. The Bryant University product is hitting .260 for the Suns with two home runs and 16 runs batted in.
McCann has been the best pitcher in the league this summer. The left-hander from East Tennessee State leads the league with a 6-0 record and a 1.07 earned-run average. He has pitched 50 1/3 innings in seven starts.
The other Pittsfield starting pitcher named to the team is Reese, a right-hander from Holy Cross. Reese is 3-1 with a 3.17 ERA.
As Whitt was Pittsfield’s closer in 2013, Lagos is the 2014 closer. The righty from Bryant has a 1.14 ERA in 15 2/3 innings with eight saves. Spielvogel is 2-2 with a 1.56 ERA and a save.
Tesch is batting .297 with four homers and 14 RBI. He has 71 outfield putouts and three assists, playing between center and right field for the Suns - and has not made an error yet.
Voting for the 27th-player ends tonight.
