NORTH ADAMS -- In a matchup between two NECBL All-Star pitchers, Laconia's Jack English got the best of Trevor Scott and the North Adams SteepleCats.
English pitched 513 innings of one-hit baseball leading the Muskrats to a 4-0 victory on Tuesday at Joe Wolfe Field.
"We knew it was going to be a tight game and knew they're a team that would execute and not make any mistakes," SteepleCats manager Chris Cates said.
English pitched well, and made big pitches to get out of jams throughout. With a Steeplecats runner on third and nobody out, English recorded three straight strikeouts to end the inning. He finished with seven strikeouts in the game.
Cates said his team's inability to execute in key situations hurt.
The loss drops North Adams (15-17) a half-game behind La conia (16-16) for third place in the NECBL'S Northern Division.
J.C. Cardenas had two of North Adams' three hits. Trailing 4-0 in the ninth, his singled and advanced to third on a double by Zach Lucas, but Josh Delph grounded out to end the game.
"The main thing is to put the ball in play when you're struggling and we couldn't do that," Cardenas said. "[En glish] was hitting his spots. He was making the pitcher's pitch. He was hitting the outside corner and his breaking ball was working."
Scott allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits in six innings. Nick Masonia's two-run home run was the final blow for the Muskrats, putting the team up by four runs.
The team returns to action tonight against Newport at 6:30 p.m. at Joe Wolfe field.
