PITTSFIELD -- Wyan tenuck Country Club’s Andy Congdon shot a 2-under-par 70 to take the first round lead in the 54-hole Berkshire Hills Singles at Berkshire Hills Country Club on Friday.

Congdon, a past champion, has a one-shot lead over Longmeadow Country Club’s Patrick Oleksak and a two-shot margin over a pair of Berkshire Hills members -- Matt Ortega and George Jarck.

David Mooradian, of Troy, N.Y., and Wyantenuck’s Owen Hunterare at 1-over 73.

Defending champion Jim Mueller will have to do a lot of work if he is to successfully defend the title he won by one shot over Congdon last year. Mueller shot a 77.
