LENOX -- Lucy Schwartz had momentum on her side early in Thursday's high school golf season opener. That's all she wanted.

Schwartz, a Lenox junior, picked up the team's only birdie of the day on the par-5 second hole. She went on to card a 45 on the front nine at Cranwell Resort, Spa and Golf Club, helping the Millionaires to a 189-192 win over Mount Greylock.

"I think, when you start with a good hole, it builds your confidence up," Schwartz said shortly after her round. "For the rest of the round, you're in a good mood."

Schwartz, who became the first girl in recent memory to win her age group in a Berkshire County Junior Series tournament this summer, handled both the long and short holes well, holding her own on the par-3 third and picking up a par on the par-4 eighth to lead the way for a young Lenox squad.

Kevin Coakley, Zach Levesque and Noah Hunter added 48s for the victors.

"The scores were kind of high, but at least they were consistent," Lenox coach Dick Salinetti said. "It shows we do have some potential, and we know what we've got to work on.

"All those 48 shooters are capable of playing under 45. They told me [it was] first-match jitters, but I'm very pleased."

The low score of the day came from the Mounties' side, as No. 1 player Matt Wiseman carded a 42. He birdied the par-4 first hole, felt best on Nos. 3, 6 and 7, and didn't have trouble with his short game until three-putting on No. 9.

"My iron play was good throughout the round," Wiseman, a junior, said. "My putting was good. ... I just have to eliminate a couple of mistakes.

My driving cost me today."

No. 2 player Kyle Alvarez followed Wiseman with a 48, and eighth grader Ben Gilooly and junior Lilly Crolius carded 51s.

Greylock co-coach Brian Gill said he expected the scores from top players to be lower, but he was nonetheless positive about where the Mounties have started, and where they're headed.

"Based on what we thought we could do coming in, we were just a little off today," he said.

He added that the greens were challenging for his golfers, something Salinetti also said about his players. However, the Millionaires will get many more chances to work on their short games around the Cranwell greens.

"That's the true home-court advantage in golf," Gill said. "You get to play your home course. ... But you've got to adapt quickly and make your adjustments."
