NORTH ADAMS — With the game hanging in the balance, Mount Everett's Parker Snyder calmly sunk two free throws to give her Eagles the separation they needed in a 45-41 win over Lenox in the consolation game of the Gene Wein Holiday Tournament.
After the game was delayed by a half hour due to traffic in Cheshire, the Eagles came out slow and fell behind 15-11 after a quarter.
But it was all Everett from there, as the Eagles outscored the Millionaires in the next three quarters, buoyed by a 15-6 second quarter that gave Everett a 26-21 lead at the break.
"Yeah, she's been ice on the foul line all year," Everett coach Scott Rote said. "The first couple games there, we are trying to get it more into her inside. We had to move Parker from the outside wing inside, and she's taken a lot of the contact."
Snyder's free throws, her fourth and fifth points of the night, came with under six seconds left. After Lenox scored through Jackie Hathaway (9 points) to make it a 43-41 game with 26 seconds to go, Mount Everett killed 20 of those seconds before Snyder drew the foul.
"I have to be honest, at halftime, we were looking at the kid's eyes and thinking this isn't what you want to see," Rote said. "What I liked about [the win] was they had a bit of maturity there in those last 40-something seconds."
Gwendolyn Carpenter led the Eagles with 14 points, and she also chipped in with eight rebounds, seven steals and four assists.
"At the end of the day, the difference is they have a polished point guard," Lenox coach Mike Nykorchuck said. "In close games, not to take away from our guards, but right now [Carpenter] is very seasoned, veteran and savvy point guard who wants the ball in her hands at the end of the game."
For Lenox, Alice Najimy finished with 17 points to lead everyone, including all three Lenox 3-point buckets. She also had 13 rebounds, while Hathaway finished with nine boards.
Lenox falls to 0-2 with the loss, while Everett moves to 3-1.
