PITTSFIELD >> It had been more than a decade since a Pittsfield High School girls basketball player had scored 1,000 points. Friday night, Peyton Steinman ended that run.
Steinman cracked the 1,000-point milestone with the final two of her 12 first-quarter points, as the Generals (8-3) rolled to a 61-29 win over Taconic.
"It means a lot to me," said Steinman, who joins her aunt Hollie on the Berkshire County girls' basketball 1,000-point list. "I'm up there with my coach and a bunch of other PHS legends."
The coach she's referring to is Pittsfield assistant Courtney Shepard, who scored 1,498 points in her PHS career. Shepard is the top girls scorer in Pittsfield High School history and ninth in Berkshire County.
Hollie Steinman, who played at Taconic, finished with 1,261 career points. Peyton Steinman is now 259 points behind her aunt and 496 behind Shepard.
It was a "thing" around school all day. Peyton Steinman admitted that a lot of people in school had discussed the milestone, and it was mentioned during an afternoon pep rally.
"So it was all around me," she said.
The Pittsfield girls list of 1,000-point scorers is a who's who of the top girls players in the county. Judi Jarrett, Maggie Ward and the Ladley sisters — Stephanie, Erin and Megan — are also on the purple and white banner that hangs in the Moynihan Field House.
Steinman got the needed basket when she scored on a fast break with 26 seconds left in the first quarter. Steinman converted a nice feed from Makailey Cookis
"I was nervous to get the 12 points," said Steinman after the game.
Quite often, players think about how they're going to reach the milestone, but not Steinman.
"I really had no idea," she said. "To be honest, I wasn't concerned how it was going to happen."
In the game, Pittsfield jumped out to a 17-8 lead after one quarter, with Steinman getting all but two of her 14 points in the opening quarter. If the Braves had any hope of a comeback, it was quashed when Pittsfield outscored the Braves 18-5 in the second quarter.
Bella Aitken was actually the high scorer for Pittsfield, with a game-best 16 points, while Julia Eline-Wright chipped in with 11 points. Britney Perkett had 10 rebounds and Toni Satrape had eight boards. The Generals were more patient on offense, and got more than Steinman involved in the offense.
The win was Pittsfield's second straight after losing to Longmeadow in the Hoophall Classic Friday.
"I think that game and some of our other losses showed us what we need to work on," said Steinman.
Jasmine Rodriguez had seven points to pace Taconic.
