LENOX — The girls soccer season kicked off for two teams on Wednesday night as Lenox, the winner of last year's Berkshire South division, defeated last year's runner-up Lee 5-0 at Lenox Memorial Middle and High School.

Lenox got on the board early as sophomore Julie Pehlert scored her first goal of the season. It came just under four minutes into the game on an assist by sophomore Abby Schilling to make the score 1-0.

The Millionaires were able to keep the momentum rolling, too, as senior captain Tova Brown set up a goal by Shelby Lynch, making the score 2-0 just under 10 minutes into the contest.

The score remained 2-0 until there were just over five minutes remaining in the first half. That's when Schilling scored unassisted, making it 3-0 in favor of the Millionaires heading into the half.

"I know when we come out hard as a team, that's what happens," Pehlert said. "It showed how we can play as a team. I think there are some minor things we still need to work on, but we have to keep the intensity up for an entire season."

Lee had shots on goal all night long, but senior captain Shannon Meisberger, Lenox's goalie, stopped all 12 shots the Wildcats attempted.

"I told the girls that it is one thing to hang your heads on a game you lost because we played poorly," Lee coach Lauren Finnegan said. "It is another thing when you lose to a very good team. We have things we have to work on, but we can't do any judging on how the year will go based on this one game."

For most of the second half, the score stayed 3-0. With 7:52 remaining in the game, Schilling scored her second goal of the night, this time on an assist from Brown, her second assist of the night.

With only 3:13 left in the game, Brown added a goal of her own on an assist from Nicole Gamberoni, making the score 5-0.

"We have a few players in the middle that did a really good job at controlling the ball," Lenox coach Kyle Zinchuk said. "They were able to give us a lot of looks."

By the end of the night, Lenox had 19 shots on Lee goalie Brianna Hawley, with her saving 14 of them.

"While it didn't show up in the stat sheet, they did a lot of things that aren't always going to show up in the stat sheet," Zinchuk said. "It was a great team effort, everyone was contributing tonight."

Lenox returns to action on Friday when it plays Pope Francis on the road. Lee will host Taconic on Friday.
