GREAT BARRINGTON >> Senior running back Issaiah Jackson rushed for 267 yards and four touchdowns to lead Chicopee past Monument Mountain 32-13 at Spartan Field on Friday.
Jackson punched in three of his four scores in the second half, as the visitors, down 7-6 at halftime, outscored the Spartans 26-6 after intermission.
"It was a total team effort," said Jackson after the game. "We knew we had to come out and play better. The offensive line did a great job opening up holes for me."
The Spartan defense did a fairly good job keeping Jackson in check in the first half. Monument's outside linebackers and defensive ends did a good job of containing Jackson's running to the outside.
Chicopee scored first, as Jackson punctuated a seven-play, 75-yard drive with a 31-yard run in the first quarter. The point-after kick failed.
But the Spartans came back after Harley Dargie blocked a punt and recovered the ball on the Chicopee 18-yard line early in the second quarter. Five plays later, Shamall Schoonmaker pounded over from the two. Kadin Shafiroff's kick put the home side up, 7-6.
But in the second half, Chicopee went to a double tight end set for added blocking power, and with more blockers, Jackson exploded. His eight-yard scoring run on the visitors' first possession made it 12-7. Quarterback Matt Sweenor capped a 66-yard drive with a seven-yard run and then it was Jackson again, scoring on an 18-yard run to open the fourth quarter and again on a five-yard jaunt on the next series.
Chicopee scored on its first four possessions of the second half to ice the game.
Schoonmaker had a strong running game for the Spartans, with 118 yards on 21 carries.
