PITTSFIELD — If there were any doubts as to whether or not Hoosac Valley was a contender in the Berkshire North, those doubts were put to rest on Wednesday.
Claudia Bresett, Shaleigh Levesque and Ellie Field each contributed a goal in the Hurricanes' 3-0 road win over Pittsfield.
The win improves Hoosac — a team that finished 6-10-2 a year ago — to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the North after the team's win over the Generals in a physical game.
"I think we held our own," Hoosac goalie Kailynne Frederick said. "When they pushed, we pushed back. I don't think we stepped down, we kept a level head and did a really good job."
On the other side, Pittsfield dropped to 2-4-2 overall and 0-2-2 in the North with the loss. And while the Generals still have 10 games remaining, they'll need to start scoring more in order to make a push toward a Western Mass. berth.
"We had a lot of shots, but they converted on their opportunities," Pittsfield coach Andy Waluszko said. "We're just not finishing. We scored five against Taconic, but almost every other game it's been one goal."
Bresett opened the scoring for the Hurricanes just under three minutes into the contest. The sophomore forward lofted a ball toward the goal, and between the height of the shot and the strong wind swirling around Kirvin Park, the ball landed perfectly between the goalie and the crossbar to put Hoosac up 1-0.
And while Levesque gave the Hurricanes a two-goal advantage with just over 10 minutes to go until halftime, Hoosac coach Kathy Budaj also pointed to the defense as part of the reason the team has found success.
"We've been working hard in practices, the girls are working well together," Budaj said. "Defense has been very, very solid. From the goalie through, and then to the midfield and the offense, as a coach it's so nice to see what they're able to do."
Field closed the scoring at just under the hour mark, pushing one past Pittsfield goalie Hayley Tobin. It effectively put the game out of reach for the Generals, as the team had been pushing for a goal in an attempt to cut the lead in half.
"The decision-making is not what it needs to be," Waluszko said of his team. "It has to get better. That's the thing, our decision-making is not good at all.
"Hoosac came out and was really aggressive today. They played strong and won the 50/50 balls."
Pittsfield isn't back in action until Oct. 6 at Hoosac. Then the Generals play Wahconah twice in a 10-day span beginning on Oct. 8.
As for Hoosac, the Hurricanes face Monument Mountain on Friday at home. It'll be a matchup between the only two teams still undefeated within Berkshire North play, as Monument is 3-0-1.
