1 dead in Springfield apartment building fire


SPRINGFIELD (AP) - One person has died in a fire in an apartment building in Springfield.

The Republican reports that the Springfield Fire Department says one of two people taken from the burning building on Sunday was declared dead at Baystate Medical Center.

Firefighters made their way to a third-floor apartment where they found someone lying on the kitchen floor. The unidentified person was carried downstairs to medical personnel, who began CPR and took the victim to an ambulance.

A woman was rescued from a second-floor porch where she was stranded. Firefighters using a ladder took the uninjured woman off the roof.

The cause of the fire is being investigated

The victim's name is being withheld until family members are notified.
