1 man dead, 1 injured in shooting at Amherst apartment

AMHERST >> One man is dead and another is injured after a shooting in the quiet college town of Amherst.

The shooting happened at an apartment complex early Saturday morning, shortly after midnight. Police spent much of Saturday at the scene.

Mary Carey, a spokeswoman for the Northwestern district attorney's office, says police do not believe the shooting was random and say members of the public are not at risk.

The injured man was brought to UMass Medical Center in Worcester.

The victims were not immediately identified.

A graduate student at the University of Massachusetts who lives in the complex told The Republican newspaper that he heard gunshots and screaming. He says police came with dogs and searched the woods behind the complex.
