17 cars of car train derail in Housatonic; no injuries reported
GREAT BARRINGTON -- Numerous freight cars derailed along the Housatonic Railroad Company line on Thursday evening in the village of Housatonic, according to Great Barrington police.
No injuries or hazardous material spills were reported.
Shortly before 7 p.m., 17 railroad cars of a 43-car train derailed near 186 Front St., near the center of the village of Housatonic. One of the cars that derailed was resting against a nearby building containing art studios, police said.
Though there was no immediate concern of spilled hazardous waste, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection responded as a precaution.
The Federal Railroad Administration and the Housatonic Railroad Company also responded to the scene.
