HANCOCK -- State police are investigating an 18-year-old's report that he was assaulted with a baseball bat at a Route 20 rest area early Thursday morning.

A state police spokesman said Pittsfield police reported to them that the 18-year-old male who identifies as a woman was dropped off at the police station and said he was assaulted by three men at the rest area in Hancock. The alleged victim was taken to BMC, treated and released, police said.

At the hospital, state police interviewed the 18-year-old, who said the assault took place on Route 20 near the New York border.

Troopers went with the victim Thursday morning to verify the scene of the alleged assault, the state police spokesman said, and the person was later taken to a homeless shelter.

The matter was referred to state police investigators with the Berkshire County District Attorney's office, the spokesman said.
