$19K makeover for park entry

Monday September 24, 2012

LENOX -- The gateway to the town’s heavily used outdoor recreational center is getting a spiffy makeover following Select Board approval of a $19,831 project to rebuild the Kennedy Park entrance off Main Street, above the Church on the Hill.

Final plans for the improvement were formally presented to board members at their recent meeting; previously, the board had approved the overall design and Town Meeting voters had authorized funding for the upgrade in May 2010.

As displayed by Town Manager Gregory Federspiel at the Sept. 19 meeting, the project first approved by the Kennedy Park Committee in 2009 includes repaving the entrance adjacent to the water tower at the top of the driveway, several benches, a "landing area," and a post-and-beam railing adjacent to several parking spots reserved for handicapped or mobility impaired visitors.

Granite pavers, with adjoining plantings, will be placed at the entrance and a trailhead bulletin board will be installed, similar to the one at the West Dugway Road entrance. It will include maps and a park history, with posted rules and regulations.

A small memorial plaque will be placed on the board in honor of the late Sam Greenfield, a longtime trail-maintenance volunteer and former owner of the nearby Aspinwall riding stables.

The project was delayed pending the recently completed installation of a new water-storage tank, said Federspiel.

"I think it’s going to be a great project," said Selectman Edward Lane. "Simple, straightforward, that’s all we need."

Selectman David Roche agreed, declaring: "What we’re proposing looks a heck of a lot better than what’s there."

Following extended questioning and discussion in painstaking detail by a half dozen residents attending the Sept. 19 meeting, the Select Board voted 4-0 to go forward with the project, prepared by Rob Akyord of Greylock Design Associates. It will be installed by Tom Farley Land Design of Stockbridge, which submitted the lowest of three bids.
