2 men charged in Springfield killing to stand trial together

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. >> A Springfield judge has ruled against a request for two men charged in connection with a fatal shooting to be tried separately.

Travis Perkins and Brian Slater face murder charges in connection with the July 2014 death of 27-year-old Jermaine Cowell, found shot in the street near his home.

Their lawyers had told a Hampden Superior Court judge in June that Slater's plan at trial is to point the finger at Perkins.

Prosecutors submitted a motion for joinder of the two cases at trial. They say the defendants were engaged in a joint venture.

The Republican reports that the judge in a July 13 decision said the defenses of Perkins and Slater aren't "mutually antagonistic or irreconcilable."

The case is set to go to trial on Sept. 7.
