22nd-ranked Williams defeats Skidmore in women's basketball
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. >> The Williams College women's basketball team boarded the bus for Skidmore with a national ranking. The Ephs came home with the ranking unscathed.
Williams is to 22nd in this week's D3hoops.com national women's poll, after being unranked. The Ephs celebrated with a 69-52 win over the Thoroughbreds Tuesday night, improving to a perfect 4-0.
Four Ephs scored in double figures, led by Devon Caveney's game-high 19 points. Oge Uwanaka and Katie Litman each registered double-doubles. Uwanaka had 10 points and 11 rebounds while Litman had 11 points and 10 boards.
Williams trailed 18-17 after the first quarter and 32-27 at halftime. But the Ephs exploded with a 19-4 third quarter to pull away.
Caveney hit a 3-point basket with 7:48 left in the third quarter, giving Williams a 34-32 lead, its first of the night. Haley English drained a trey of her own a minute later. The Ephs took the lead for keeps when Lauren McCall got an assist on a 3-ball by Caveney with 6:37 to play in the third quarter.
That trey started a 12-0 run that helped the Ephs extend their lead. Caveney closed out the run on a layup with 51 seconds left.
It was a pretty sloppy game as the two teams combined for 49 turnovers — 22 for Williams. Skidmore had 27 turnovers and the Ephs had 32 points off of those turnovers.
