$3K gift to Moments House will aid cancer patients

PITTSFIELD -- Moments House, a nonprofit that supports cancer patients, will be providing assistance for financially struggling people thanks to a $3,000 donation from Pittsfield-based UNICO.

Alice Trumbull, executive director of Moments House, said she's previously directed cancer patients to UNICO, an Italian-American service organization that supports charitable work. But on Friday, UNICO provided Moments House the financial assistance to lead the way.

Trumbull said businesses also can contribute to the fund to assist cancer patients.

"It can be very expensive and overwhelming very quickly," Trumbull said.

Applicants should be Berkshire County residents experiencing financial difficulty due to a cancer diagnosis. Individuals are encouraged to call or e-mail Moments House.

A cancer diagnosis can be costly because "you could go in for treatment, then go in the next day for a shot and then later in the week you'll have to go for hydration for the treatment," Trumbull said.

The funding could cover the cost of a stray bill, gas, or other expenses. Nationally, there are organizations that can help individuals, Trumbull said, depending on the condition -- but it can be difficult because of the research required.

Trumbull said the Moments House board of directors will likely discuss additional requirements for receiving funds. Moments House is also soliciting donations from other business to build the fund.

For information or to submit an application, call Moments House at (413) 443-6800 or e-mail alice@momentshouse.org.
