4 Springfield officers hurt breaking up bar brawl
SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- One Springfield police officer suffered a concussion and another broke a finger while trying to break up a closing-time bar brawl that involved as many as 60 people.
Police say four officers in all were hurt and nine people arrested in connection with the fracas at 2 a.m. Saturday at Fat Cat's.
The people arrested are scheduled to be arraigned Monday on charges including assault and battery on a police officer and disorderly conduct.
Officer Eleni Mendez was working a detail at the bar when she noticed a fight inside involving women. While trying to break it up she was punched in the back of the head, then jumped by several other people who kicked and punched her. She suffered a severe concussion.
Several other officers were also attacked.
