6 charged with catching more sea bass than legally allowed

WAREHAM, MASS. >> State Environmental Police say six men spent part of the holiday weekend catching more fish than they were legally allowed.

Maj. Patrick Moran says officers responded to a Wareham boat ramp Sunday after the harbormaster reported a possible violation.

Moran tells the Cape Cod Times officers boarded a vessel and found eight coolers filled with sea bass and scup. He says 122 of the 219 sea bass were undersized and the boat's limit was 10.

The boat's owner was issued a criminal summons on charges including commercial fishing during a closed season, possession of undersized sea bass, and fishing without a saltwater recreational license. Five others on board were given civil citations on similar offenses.

The boat, a trailer, gear and fish were seized.

No names were released.
