A lack of input on the carousel

Wednesday October 10, 2012

So the Berkshire Carousel will be housed permanently at The Berkshire Mall. Really?

The carousel project has had a great deal of support from residents of Pittsfield and the county at large, both financial and artisan. As such, major decisions like where to put it should have some public input. The carousel is a one-of-a-kind work of art, and its permanent home should reflect this.

To install it in a nondescript mall that could be Anytown, USA, would be nothing short of a travesty. A central location in the county, within walking distance to downtown and the need for accessibility to tourists all argue strongly for a Pittsfield address.

Whatever location is ultimately chosen, one would hope that the decision is rooted in a shared vision of the future of Berkshire County and not as a quid pro quo for past "support."
