A trade agreement that benefits U.S.

Wednesday September 12, 2012

Dear Senators Chuck Schu mer and Kirsten Gillibrand: I am writing to urge you to cosponsor the 21st Century Trade Agreements and Market Access Act (S. 3347) introduced by Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).

All the candidates are talking about stopping American job offshoring. By co-sponsoring this bill, you can show me that you intend to actually do something about it.

Twenty years of the NAFTA/WTO "trade" model has led to massive American job loss and downward pressure on our wages. It’s given broad, expansive new rights to foreign corporations to attack our environmental and health laws in foreign tribunals. It has flooded America with unsafe imported food and products.

Now, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is threatening to expand that damage exponentially. I am outraged that U.S. trade negotiators are pushing another of these retrograde deals that will offshore more U.S. jobs and ban Buy American procurement.

The 21st Century Trade Agree ments and Market Ac cess Act can get our trade negotiators back on track. TPP is turning into NAFTA-on-steroids with all of Asia and Latin America. I want a new trade agreement model that can deliver the benefits of expanded trade while avoiding the damage caused by the status quo NAFTA-WTO model.

That is why I am asking you to co-sponsor the 21st Century Trade Agreements and Market Access Act today. This legislation delivers on my expectations that you and the president will create a new American trade policy that works for the 99 percent -- not slam us with another NAFTA.

Please sign on as a co-sponsor of this important legislation. As a constituent, I look forward to hearing your response.

Canaan, N.Y.
