After 15-0 rout of Hoosac, Taconic baseball looks to the postseason

PITTSFIELD -- Jordan Barbarotta and Joey Dewey combined for a four-hit shutout, and Myles Candelet had a pair of doubles as Taconic routed Hoosac Valley 15-0 in a mercy rule-shortened, five-inning game.

"This really couldn't have worked out much better for us," said Brave coach Kevin Stannard. "I told Jordan and Joey that we would be giving both of them some time on the mound. Jordan threw 44 pitches and Joey threw 20."

"We're just trying to play well going into the [Western Mass.] tournament," said catcher Brian Bonacquisti, who walked three times, scored a run and called a very good game behind the plate.

The Braves (13-5) are trying to preserve their pitching for the postseason. They have a game continuation and a final game in the Berkshire Classic, both against Mount Greylock.

The Hurricanes, however, have no such luxury. With the loss, Hoosac is now 9-9, with games coming up against Mohawk Regional and Monument Mountain.

Hoosac needs a win in either game to advance to the Western Mass. tournament.

On Monday afternoon, the two teams played a scoreless first inning. But the home side plated four runs in the second inning, with Candelet's RBI double and a two-run double by Mitch Clary being the key hits.

The crusher came in the fourth. Taconic batted around and scored eight times. Mike Ferris came in at designated hitter and got two hits in the inning. The big clout in the fourth was a three-run double by Kevin Squires.

Barbarotta picked up the win, striking out six and walking none. He allowed two hits. Dewey was about as good, striking out four in two innings, with no walks and two hits.

In addition to Candelet, Alex Carusotto had a single, double, two walks, three RBI and two runs scored; Clary had two singles, a double, a walk, scored a run and had three RBI.

Dewey had two singles, two walks, an RBI and two runs scored. Brandon Tworig was 2 for 2 for the Hurricanes.
