LENOX -- Police are investigating a brazen midday break-in at a residence just off Main Street in the heart of downtown and have exchanged information with Pittsfield Police to determine possible connections to any of the half dozen recent burglaries in the city.

Thousands of dollars in electronic equipment was stolen sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at 25 Sunset Ave., across from a entrance driveway to the Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center, said Officer William Colvin. The thief or thieves broke into the home through a rear garage window, according to the police report. Family members discovered the break-in when they returned home in mid-afternoon.

A promising lead is being pursued involving a possible New York state link to the case, Colvin said.

Missing from the home, in addition to desktop computers, laptops and MP3 players, are some power tools, Colvin said. The residents have provided police with an inventory list, including serial numbers of the stolen units.

Colvin noted that the home is in a thickly settled area with plenty of vehicle and foot traffic. A nearby resident reported seeing a black pickup truck parked in the neighborhood during the estimated time of the break-in.

Anyone who may have noticed something suspicious in the vicinity is asked to contact the Lenox Police Department at (413) 637-2346.

Police also are probing an apparently unrelated burglary at a house under renovation at 10 Lee Road, off Routes 7 and 20, discovered early on Wednesday. Power equipment is missing from the site, but there was no sign of forced entry.
