Alleged Xtra Mart robber arrested at North Adams home

NORTH ADAMS — A 49-year-old city man who police say snatched cash out of a convenience store clerk's hands was apprehended at his home on Friday.

North Adams police arrested Jay Deeley after a search of his home turned up clothing matching that worn by the perpetrator of an unarmed robbery at Xtra Mart on Monday night.

Surveillance footage taken at Xtra Mart the night in question shows a man wearing the same hooded sweatshirt police found in Deeley's home Friday ask a clerk to make change for a $100 bill.

When the clerk took the change amount from the register, the man grabbed it from her hand and ran out of the store, escaping on foot.

Police were assisted in tracking Deeley down by witnesses, who provided descriptions of the perpetrator and his clothing.

Deeley will face one charge of unarmed robbery. His bail was set at $3,000.
