Allied golf season starts Saturday

Friday May 11, 2012

The Allied Tour's new season gets started Saturday at the Country Club of Pittsfield when 118 teams tee it up in search on the tour's two-ball title.

One thing is certain about this year's event -- at least half of the winning team will be new. Last year's champions were brothers Andy and Richie Congdon, who won at Berkshire Hills Country Club.

Andy, the reigning Mass. Golf Association senior player of the year, isn't in this year's field. That leaves Richie, a member at Wyantenuck Country Club and a three-time Stockbridge Golf Club champion, with a new partner, fellow Wyantenuck member Steve Soule.

In addition to Congdon and Soule, other likely top contenders include Worthington Golf Club's James Ryan and Steve Magargal; Wahconah Country Club's Paul Briggs and Matt Morrison; Waubeeka Golf Links' Chris and Peter Baran; Egremont Country Club's Frank Cipollino and Chris Martin; and Berkshire Hills Country Club's Mike and Shane Ortega.

There are a handful of other teams also capable of rising to the top of the leaderboard.

There will be two shotgun starts to accommodate the large field. The morning wave will tee off at 8 a.m., and the afternoon groups will go out at 1:15.
