Amherst boys beat Greylock in soccer

WILLIAMSTOWN - Amherst's Brandon Vazquez scored a late goal to snap a 1-1 tie and hand the Mount Greylock boys their first home loss since 2008 on Saturday night.

There wasn't much to separate these two Western Mass. powerhouses on Saturday. The Hurricanes are now 6-1-2, while Mount Greylock's record is 9-1.

The visitors scored the only goal of the first half when Eric Schleewens popped in a header at 7:07. The assist went to Ian Robson.

"We actually controlled play for much of the first half," said Mountie coach Blair Dils. "we were a little unlucky to get out of that first half down a goal. We had some good chances."

The Mounties knotted the contest on a score by Nathan Majumder, assisted by Eric Hirsch early in the second half. The two teams battled on even terms when Vazquez broke the ice.

"He's big and he's fast," said Dils of the Hurricanes' leading scorer.

Dils said that while the defeat was unfortunate, he was pleased with his teams' effort.

"We played some of our best soccer tonight," he said. "It was good to play a quality opponent. And I think if that game is 20 minutes longer, we win it, no question." --- Amherst 1 1 - 2 Greylock 0 1 - 1 First half A - Eric Schleewens (Ian Robson) 7:07 Second half G - Nathan Majumder (Eric Hirsch) 46:15 A - Brandon Vazquez (Adrian Houghton) 59"40.
