Andy Mick to retire as president of New England Newspapers Inc.
PITTSFIELD - Digital First Media, which operates MediaNews Group, Journal Register Company and Digital First Ventures, announced today the retirement of Andy Mick, the president of New England Newspapers Inc. and the publisher of The Berkshire Eagle.
Mick, who turns 64 on Jan. 27, will remain with New England Newspapers through March 31. Digital First Media has started an immediate search, both internally and externally, for his successor.
"Andy has made the Berkshires his home and his commitment to the community has made him a tremendous leader and he will be sorely missed," said Jeff Bairstow, president of Digital First Media. "We wish Andy the best as he seeks new adventures and enjoys the beauty of the region he has served for more than a decade."
Mick has served as president of New England Newspapers - which includes The Berkshire Eagle, the North Adams Transcript, the Bennington (Vt.) Banner, the Brattleboro (Vt.) Reformer, The Manchester (Vt.) Journal, and The Advocate in Williamstown - for 13 years.
Mick previously worked for the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group before joining MediaNews Group in 1990.
"For the past 13 years I have been blessed by life in the Berkshires and my association with the hundreds of co-workers throughout the New England Newspaper group. In particular, being publisher of The Berkshire Eagle has been my finest professional experience," said Mick. "I will always cherish the experience I have had, the wisdom I have gained and the great friendships I have made during my long and colorful career."
Deciding to retire was not easy, but Mick said, "You kind of know."
"I think everybody has to come to terms with that at some point in their life," he said.
The Richmond resident said he plans to remain socially, economically and intellectually part of the community for the rest of his life.
