Arson suspected in Pontoosuc Lake fire
PITTSFIELD -- Pittsfield firefighters responded to what appeared to be an intentionally set fire at Ponterill, a YMCA subdivision near Pontoosuc Lake, Wednesday evening, according to fire officials.
Around 9 p.m., crews responded to a report of an outside fire at 21 East Acres Road. When they arrived, the fire was actually "heavily involved" in a single story wood structure commonly referred to as the former caretaker’s house, according to Pittsfield Fire Chief Robert Czerwinski.
He said the house has been vacant for about 10 years and there were no utilities in the house.
"With the utilities shut off, we can exclude that," Czerwinski said. "The cause of fire is unknown, but we’re leaning toward intentionally set."
There were no injuries reported, and an investigation will resume at daylight, since the stability of the structure was unknown in the mostly dark area.
East Acres Road, a somewhat secluded back road just off Pontoosuc Lake, was closed to the public during the response.
