At the movies

Soccer dad

Gerard Butler plays an ex-soccer star who, in an effort to build a better relationship with a son who hardly knows him, signs on as coach of the boy's soccer team in the PG-13-rated romantic comedy, "Playing for Keeps."

Jessica Biehl is his ex-wife and Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Judy Greer make supporting appearances.

Begins Friday at North Adams Movieplex 8. in concert

Quiet sounds

Singer-songwriter Heather Maloney writes quiet, but energetic songs informed by a pop sensibility that showcase her fluttering voice and distinct lyrical perspective.

She will play tonight at the Dreamaway Lodge with her road-tested rhythm section in tow.

Already a familiar face in Becket, she played as part of the Dreamaway's Nouveau Revue festival, and she performed in the music inn just last month.

Emerging Northampton band Darlingside shares the bill.
