Babe Ruth regional finals: Pittsfield 15s win, force ‘if' game for title
QUINCY -- The Pittsfield 15-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars have forced an "if" game in the New England Regional Tournament.
Joey Dewey gave up three runs, one earned in four innings and Devon Johnston pitched three to get the save as Pittsfield hung on to beat Waterford, Conn. 8-6 in the first game of what is now a doubleheader. The second game was scheduled to start 30 minutes after the completion of Pittsfield's win.
Pittsfield took a 6-0 lead after five innings, only to have the Connecticut state champions cut that in half in the fifth.
An RBI single by Alex Carusotto and an RBI double by Johnston plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning, giving Pittsfield an 8-3 lead.
Those runs were critical because Waterford scored three runs on three hits and a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Chung was the tying run and he came to the plate with two outs, but Johnston struck Chung out looking to end the first game.
