Baseball: Little League district, Ripken state schedules released


Schedules have been released for the upcoming Massachusetts District 1 Little League baseball tournaments.

The fourth annual Don Gleason Mass. District 1 11-12-year-old tournament, featuring seven teams from Berkshire County, will be hosted by the Adams Little League. First-round games begin Saturday.

Great Barrington has a first-round bye in the 11-12 bracket, playing the Dalton/Hinsdale-Pittsfield Don Gleason North winner Sunday. The Pittsfield South-North Adams winner will face the Pittsfield Myron Gray West-Adams winner on Sunday. Losers go to the consolation bracket, which begins Monday, July 7.

Weekend games will be held at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m., with weekday games taking place at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

In the 10-11-year-old tournament, five teams are entered in the round-robin draw -- host North Adams, Great Barrington, and Pittsfield North, South and West teams. Games begin Saturday, with North Adams meeting Great Barrington at noon and West facing South at 2 p.m.

After each team plays four games between Saturday and July 12, the top seeds will play in the championship game at noon Sunday, July 13.

Cal Ripken Baseball

The Williamstown 10-under Cal Ripken team, which won the District 1 championship last week, begins play in the 46/60 state tournament Saturday in Sutton with fellow district qualifier Lee.

Williamstown is in Pool A of the 12-team tournament, and will face Frontier at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by Hudson at 4 p.m. Lee, the District 1 runner-up, plays Pepperell at noon Saturday, then Northbridge at 2 p.m.

After Sunday's round-robin games - Williamstown facing Uxbridge at 11 a.m., and Lee meeting Groton at 3 p.m. -- the top four teams will play in Monday's semifinals. The championship game is Tuesday, July 8.
