Baseball roundup: McCann Tech tops Smith Vocational

NORTH ADAMS — McCann Tech's Mike Ferrara had a strong all-around game, leading the Hornets to a 2-1 win over Smith Vocational on Tuesday.

Ferrara hit a walk-off double in the seventh inning for the Hornets. Rob Pecor started the inning reaching base on a hit by pitch. Eathan Heller couldn't move the runner up on a sacrifice, but hit a two-strike pitch for a single. Ferrara then hit a one-out double, scoring Pecor. Ferrara earned the win on the mound as well, going the distance, striking out four and walking one.

"He's our No. 3 [starter], and he issued his first walk in 16 innings today," McCann coach Pat Ryan said. "He pounds the strike zone. He allows the team to put the ball in play and our defense makes the play."

SHEFFIELD >> Mount Everett's Nick Tomich regrouped from early control issues and some Eagle defensive mistakes to earn the win.

Tomich issued four walks in the first two innings, allowing Twin Valley to take a 3-1 lead. The Eagles kept chipping away at the deficit, however, and Cavan Brady drove in Nolan Dupont for the winning RBI double in the sixth inning.

Tomich struck out six and allowed one earned run. Brady went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI.

"Nick Tomich did a great job," Everett coach Jesse Carpenter said. "He gutted one out. ... He really limited the damage and got an impressive win."
