Baseball: Suns, Navigators split a Friday twinbill
LYNN -- A four-run fourth inning that featured a two-run single by Kyle Singleton pushed the Pittsfield Suns to a 6-3 win over the North Shore Navigators in the opening game of a doubleheader.
North Shore took the nightcap, 2-0.
In the first game, Derek Gardella, Bo Slemons and Great Barrington's John Kinne also had singles in the second inning.
Singleton had three hits, while Kinne and Slemons each had two. Christian Lavoie picked up the win for Pittsfield, scattering seven hits, walking two and striking out five.
In the second contest, Andrew Broderick went 2 for 3 and Justin Davis scattered four hits for the shutout win. Josh Martin took the loss for Pittsfield.
WAKEFIELD, R.I. -- Ocean State scored two early runs in the bottom of the first and held on for a 2-1 win over North Adams on Friday night.
Seeing their four-game winning streak come to an end, the SteepleCats (8-9) settled for a season series split with the expansion Waves (9-8).
In a game pegged to be a pitcher's duel between North Adams' Scott Squier and Ocean State's James Bessell, the expectations held true. Squier struck out nine over seven innings and gave up seven hits and three walks. Bessell yielded four hits over six innings to just one walk.
Kevin Martir scored North Adams' lone run, pulling the visitors within one in the sixth inning.
S. Berkshire 4, Post 68 3
Erik Derwitsch struck out eight Post 68 batters to earn a complete-game win Thursday.
Post 68 scored twice in the seventh, but couldn't push across the tying run.
Two Southern Berkshire (5-4) runs scored on passed balls. Joey Dewey had an RBI double for Post 68.
