BCC to host 3rd annual Berkshire Drum Fest

PITTSFIELD -- The third annual Berkshire Drum Fest featuring drum, percussion, dance and song from around the world will be held on Saturday at Berkshire Community College's Boland Theater in the Koussevitzky Art Center, 1350 West St., Pittsfield. The show is sponsored by Hillcrest Educational Centers Inc. and the Pittsfield Cultural Council.

Pre-show drum clinics will be held at 6:30 p.m., with short segment performances beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is a sliding scale $5 to $10 suggested donation at the door for this all-ages show. Proceeds will help purchase new instruments for the BCC music department and will fund scholarships for free drum lessons to Pittsfield youth and adults.

Featured professional rhythm artist lineup (not in order of appearance) includes: Aimee Gelinas and Marie Georgefils of Gaia Roots (Cuba, Haiti, West Africa drum and dance); Earl and Lashelle Noel and Ryan Bazinet (Trinidad); KDZ Drummers of Kripalu (East India, West Africa); Youth Alive Step, Dance and Drumline troupe with drummer Jerome Edgerton (modern and folk); Satya and Chapungu Mbira (Zimbabwe), Stefanie Weber (percussive tap dance), Chris Mattoon (classic drums), Bill Chapman (classic and jazz), Josh Pisano (Irish bodhran), Chris Hairston (Blue Light Jazz Trio/drum set).

Also Berkshire Bateria (Brazilian samba and capoeira dance), Marafanyi and guests (West African drum and dance); Tom Houghtaling and Daniel Cohen of Sifer (tribal hard rock and metal, with guitar); Berkshire Pulse Drum & Dance featuring Joanne DelCarpine, Kim Waterman, students and staff; Fidel Moreno (native American pow wow and water drum).

Special guests will include Garret Keele, Dion Robbins-Zust puppets and students from Gelinas' Pittsfield Monday drum class. A finale community drum jam will be led by DCF Otha Day, Gelinas and the Berkshire Rhythm Keepers.

A Percussion raffle with items donated by KDZ, Stefanie Weber Tap Dance, Tamarack Hollow Trading, Gaia Roots World Music, Wood Brothers Music Store, Berkstock, Berkshire Eastern Mountain Sports Store, STAGG percussion, Vic Firth will be held. Drums, percussion and featured artists' CDs will be for sale at the show and there will also be a cash-only bake sale.
