Behind J.T. Brown, Lee baseball holds off Mount Everett

LEE -- J.T. Brown toughed out a tight pitchers' battle with Mount Everett's Erik Derwitsch to lead Lee to a 3-2 win at Maple Street Field on Wednesday.

Brown threw a three-hitter, striking out five and walking four. Derwitsch was not too shabby, either, scattering 10 hits, punching out four and allowing only one free pass.

"If you only allow three runs in a high school game, you're not going to lose too many," said Eagles coach Jesse Carpenter. "Erik pitched very well for us."

But Brown was just a little better.

"I was going with my fastball mostly," said Brown. "I was just trying to hit my spots and move the ball around a little."

Most of the scoring was in the first inning. The visitors got on the board when Seth Angell walked, stole second and scored on a Derwitsch single.

In the bottom of the inning, Lee cracked seven singles and scored three runs. Brown, Matt Consolati and Jake Simon all had RBI for Lee.

After that, both Brown and Derwitsch settled down, although Lee had chances in the second, third and fifth innings. But Derwitsch and some timely defense kept the home side off the board.

"We ran ourselves into some outs," said Lee coach Chip Cummings. "But I told the kids, I'll take it. Aggressive base running, I have no problem with."

Everett didn't have as many chances. At one point, Brown set down 16 of 19 batters.

But the defending Division III state finalists rallied in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Dave Funk reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Eli Cook's double.

But Brown struck out Charles Parsons on a good low heater to end the game.

"Yeah, I was a little tired," said Brown, "But you have to fight through that."

"We considered taking J.T. out," said Cummings, "but when I went out there to talk to him, he said he could close it out. I have a lot of confidence in him, and I thought he could do it."
