Pittsfield: Health care employees awarded scholarships

Valerie Boua and Shaun Kennedy, staff members of Berkshire Healthcare, have been awarded scholarships through the Massachusetts Senior Care Foundation.

Boua works for Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility in Pittsfield, while Kennedy is employed by Hillcrest Commons Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Pittsfield.

The Massachusetts Senior Card Foundation has supported long-term care employees with their career goals through its Foundation Scholars program for more than 25 years. This year's class of 51 awardees, most of whom are seeking nursing degrees, will use their scholarships to further their professional development within the long-term care profession.

The Foundation Scholars represent a broad cross section of employees and facilities across Massachusetts and were selected from nearly 400 applicants for this year's program, 25 percent more than in 2012.

The Massachusetts Senior Care Foundation, the education and research arm of the Massachusetts Senior Care Association, has awarded nearly $2.5 million in scholarships since it began supporting long-term-care workers in 1985. The Foundation scholarship program is one of several program components that Mass Senior Care has initiated to promote and support lifelong educational and professional development.

Pittsfield: Nuclea laboratories receives accreditation

Nuclea Biotechnologies's diagnostic laboratories have received accreditation from the College of American Pathologists based on the results of a recent site inspection.

The inspection occurred because of Nuclea's continuing expansion of the company's portfolio to provide more diagnostic assays to the public.

The CAP inspection involves the examination of a laboratory's records and quality control procedures for two years prior to accreditation.

Laboratory staff's qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record and overall management are also evaluated in the course of the accreditation.
