Berkshire Classic high school golf tournament set for Sunday

Twenty-three of the top high school golfers in Berkshire County will gather at the Stockbridge Golf Club on Sunday morning to compete in the eighth annual Berkshire Classic golf tournament.

Eight teams have sent two or three players for the annual event. Thirteen of the 23 golfers who are slated to tee off at 11:30 a.m. competed in last year's tournament.

Defending champion Nick Bator of Drury graduated in June, so he is unable to defend his title. Drury, along with Mount Everett and St. Joseph, all opted not to send players to the Classic.

The top returnees from last year were runners-up Ben Gilooly of Mount Greylock and Thomas Fraser of Lee. Both Gilooly and Fraser shot 79, finishing two shots behind Bator's 77.

"I was just trying to do the best I could," Fraser said after last year's tournament. "Seventy-seven is a really good score. I'm happy with a 79."

Both Fraser and Gilooly were freshmen last year.

For Gilooly, it was a day that started off well. He was 1-over-par through seven holes, but double-bogeyed No. 8 and 9, and triple-bogeyed the par-4 10th.

"That was atrocious," he said with a smile at the time. "From there I tried to recover from it."

Gilooly did that, with two birdies and two pars to wrap up his 79.

Six of last year's top-10 finishers are in the field, including Kyle Alvarez of Mount Greylock, Jon Dos Santos of Wahconah, Mike Kays of Taconic and Kevin Quinto of Pittsfield.

Also in the field is Colette Basiliere of Wahconah, who finished 11th last year, and is coming off her victory in the Western Massachusetts girls championship on Thursday.

This is the first 18-hole high school event for most of these golfers, and it will help them in preparation for this month's Western Mass. tournaments.

The Division I tournament will be played on Monday, Oct. 24, at The Ranch Golf Club in Southwick, while the Division II tournament will be the same day at Crestview Country Club in Agawam.

The Division III tournament, with Lee as defending champion, will be contested on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Wyantenuck Country Club in Great Barrington.
