Berkshire County girls in Bay State Games title game

BOSTON -- An All-Berkshire County West Scholastic girls basketball team will play for the Bay State Games gold medal today.

The West girls won twice on Saturday, beating Northeast 88-77 and Metro 78-67, to reach the gold medal game. That game will be played at 4 p.m. at the Reggie Lewis Center.

And to say coach Matt Ward expected his team to go 4-0 in pool play would not be true.

"To be honest with you, no," said the girls basketball coach at Miss Hall’s School when asked if he expected this success. "I knew we could score. I didn’t know how well we would play as a team.

"This team has really come together."

In the win over Northeast, Peyton Steinman had a game-high 28 points while Grace Guachione had 25 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Lauren Carnevale helped her team with eight points and a team-high 16 rebounds.

In theopener on Saturday, Steinman had 20 points, Lucy Barrett had 19 and Smith College-bound Cam Biasin added 13.

Guachione had a team-best 12 rebounds while Carnevale and MCLA-bound Emily Moulton each snared eight boards.
