Berkshire County Invitational kicks off track and field season for local teams

GREAT BARRINGTON >> Whether it was a first race of the season, a first race of a career, or a chance to try something new, the Berkshire County Invitational accomplished its job on Wednesday — it officially kicked off the 2016 track and field season.

Berkshire County teams descended upon Monument Mountain for this year's edition of the Invitational, and outside of some early wind gusts, the day proved a nice one for track and field athletes to get out and finally compete.

"It's really nice [to have this]," said Monument Mountain's Anna Lane. "I've never had something like this at our home meet. It brings in fresh, new people, really good competition. The sun is out, it was a little windy, but I think it is a really good day for a meet, and it's nice to have a lot of other people here."

Starting with the field events at 9 a.m., the Invitational played out over a six-hour stretch. During that time, there were enough close contests to keep everyone involved, while others continued to move away from the pack.

The closest races of the day came in the sprints. The Monument Mountain girls 4x100-meter relay team posted the first, just edging out Pittsfield — 54.70 seconds to 54.90 — in a six-team field.

"[The win] felt amazing," Lane said. "This is a completely new team. I've been a part of the 4x100 team for two years, and this is a completely new team. We are starting off on a good note.

"We knew Pittsfield was right in our time zone, so we were really nervous about that. But this is — this is going to be a good season."

The next came in the 110-meter hurdles final. Wahconah's Sean Harvey beat Pittsfield's Grady Pedersen by .2 seconds, 16.00 to 16.20, despite Harvey mistiming one of his first hurdle jumps.

"It was really intense," Harvey said. "I got off on my wrong foot, my opposite lead leg, so I had to four-step and switch. It ended up being a close race. I was chasing them down, and it worked out."

The closest race of the day, though, came in the boys' 200 race, where Monument's Willie Serkin topped Taconic's David McIntosh in a photo finish. Both racers finished in a time of 24.30, but Serkin had his nose just in front of McIntosh's to pick up the win.

McIntosh, though, couldn't have been too down about the result, as he picked up a first-place finish in the high jump (5-feet 8-inches), and he was one leg of Taconic's winning 4x100 team.

"It feels great, especially for the program," McIntosh said. "Our team has really come together over the last few years and we've really built a strong bond. We hand the baton off to the next person and trust in them."

The athlete with the best day was Lenox's Shannon Meisberger. The junior took first in the 100 hurdles (15.70), the 400 hurdles (1:08.70) and the long jump (15'3"). She also finished second in the high jump behind teammate Tova Brown. Both jumped 4'10", but Brown did it in a fewer amount of jumps.

"It's good, but I think the biggest thing for me is I hit what I was looking for," Meisberger said. "I had a PR in the high jump and the 100 hurdles twice. ... That was really great for me."

Mount Greylock eighth grader Madison Ross made a splash in the first meet of her career, sweeping the sprints with a 27.30 in the 200 and a 13.10 in the 100 — two tenths of a second faster than Pittsfield's Sadie Supranowicz.

"I wasn't expecting it. I was really nervous at first, and I'm really proud of myself," Ross said after winning the 100 early in the day. "[Supranowicz and I] were really close, and I was thinking in my head 'I can do it,' so I was pushing myself really hard and I went as fast as I could."

Hoosac Valley thrower Peter Barrow also had a stellar day. He finished first in the shot put with a throw of 43', and in the discus with a throw of 122'2" — over 30 feet further than Mike Hruby in second place.

"It's nice to get out here and compete and see what everyone in the county has," Barrow said. "I felt good today. I have some form stuff to work on, but I felt pretty good out there."

Other multi-event winners included Wahconah's Devon Mikaniewicz (boys long jump, triple jump), Hoosac Valley's Jared Haley (boys 1,600, 3,200) and Monument Mountain's Paige Gray (girls javelin, shot put).

Area teams will now get ready for the start of the dual-meet season, which begins next week.
