Field dedicated to Elroy Face
The Berlin Central School District honored famed Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Elroy Face with a dedication of an athletic park next to Stephentown Elementary School.
Face, who grew up in Stephentown, N.Y., saved three games for the Pirates in their 1960 World Series win over the New York Yankees.
On Oct. 28, the district held a ceremony at the Stephentown Fire Hall to dedicate the field. Face, who lives in Pittsburgh, appeared via video chat to receive the honor.
There will be a plaque put up at the athletic field to honor Face.
Face told the crowd that he "was honored, and that he never thought that as little kid growing up in Stephentown, he would ever end up where he did in life."
School board president Frank Swack and superintendent Dr. Stephen Young joined Face's niece, Anita Brothers, to honor Face.
The new Elroy Face Athletic Park will feature a basketball court, soccer field and a baseball diamond.
