Berkshire County wrestlers to compete at MIAA Division III tournament

The MIAA divisional championship wrestling tournaments kick off Friday across the state, with wrestlers from Berkshire County headed out to Wakefield High School for the Division III tournament.

Festivities begin in Wakefield with the skin checks at 12:30 p.m. and the weigh-in at 1. Matches are scheduled to begin at 3.

The other two state championship tournaments will be at Methuen High School (D-I) and Algonquin Regional High School (D-II).

Friday will consist of the opening round, the quarterfinals, and the first two consolation rounds.

The tournament picks back up on Saturday morning at 10:30, with the championship matches beginning around 4 p.m.

Monument Mountain's Nate Cormier and Mount Greylock's Devin Pelletier earned the top seeds from the West with their Western Mass. championships last weekend. Cormier won at 145 pounds as he helped his Spartans claim the Western Mass. Division III team title, while Pelletier won the championship at 170.

Wayland is the defending D-III state champion, winning the 2016 championships by 28.5 points over Norton. Taconic had the highest finish for county teams last season, placing ninth in the tournament that they hosted in Pittsfield.

Cormier will take on Noah Fuller of Ashland, the fourth-seeded Central Mass. wrestler. Cormier finished fifth at last year's MIAA Division III championships.

Pelletier, meanwhile, will face Nashoba Tech's Tom Eyles in his opening match. Pelletier had to settle for fourth at last year's championships, after picking up an injury early in the tournament before injury defaulting in the third-place match against Wayland's Jakob Warner.

Seven county wrestlers earned the West 2-seed for the state championships, starting with Taconic's Mike LaFreniere at 106. He will wrestle Alex Turcotte of Norton in the opening round.

Zabion Powell — a fifth-place finisher for Taconic last season — will wrestle Canton's Anis Chakir at 132, and Isiah Williams will face Essex's Nicholas Walker at 152. Williams placed fourth last year at 152.

Monument's John Field will face Norton's Patrick Feeney at 182, and Shamal Schoonmaker will take on Tri-County Regional's Ian McSweeney at 195.

Mount Everett's top seed is Pat Fosby at 120, where he will wrestle Tyngsboro's Josh Ducharme.

Mount Greylock's Alex Griffis, battling multiple injury issues, will wrestle Dedham's OJ Pekacar at 220. Griffis finished fourth at last year's D-III championships, falling in two extra periods to Melrose's Antonio DiForonzo by a 3-2 decision.

At 113, Mount Everett's Anthony Lupiani will wrestle Dighton-Rehobot's Ben Palermo and Monument's Max Buffoni will face South No. 1 Mason Theriault of Scituate.

Monument Mountain's Sam Cormier will face Georgetown-Ipswich's Josiah Krason at 120, teammate Dorian Page will face Ashland's Michael Crupi at 132, Alex Leonard will face Marblehead's Stephen Hopkins at 138, and Steven Wool will represent the Spartans at 220 against Central No. 1 seed Nick Riordan of Ashland.

Greylock's Robert Sutter will take on Central No. 1 wrestler Ramazan Attasauov of Wayland at 126, and Jude Rorke will wrestle John Blythe of Georgetown-Ipswich at 152.

Taconic's other wrestlers will be Dylan Burke at 160, squaring off with Central No. 1 Jakob Warner of Wayland, and Tanner Hastings at 195 against Quabbin's Stephen Tremblay.

The top six wrestlers from each weight class will advance to the MIAA All-State tournament next weekend at Reading Memorial High School.
